Post by Angus ManwaringNothing to do with having a "cat" is it?
On the Mk 3, I think the GL 1800 is 90 hp against the CL's 75 hp.
No. You have the power output right, but the difference is multi-point
injection on the GL, with single on the CL. Like you say, both were 1800
(well 1781) cc. I'd imagine the engines were otherwise very similar-
IIRC all MK3's had a catalyst. There was a special edition MK2 Golf CL
Catalyst, (actually badged as such) at one time, which IIRC still had
the 2e2 carb on a 1595cc engine, but with a cat. It produced a bit less
BHP than the non-cat (72 as against 75?).
C, CL, GL trim levels preceeded cats. The MK1 Golf had C (1093cc, basic)
, CL (1272cc, a bit better) and GL (14something cc, plush for the
70s/80s) from a long time ago.
Trim level designations have often been arbitary strings of letters: GL
can mean 'Grande Luxe' or some other rubbish, but the general idea seems
to be more letters=more trim:
eg: Ford:
No letters--->L--->XL---->GXL---->Ghia--->Ghia X
VW
Nothing---->C--->CL---->GL--->GTI
or
S--->SE--->Sport--->GTI
or
Nothing--->N---->L---->GL (IIRC)
